VMBO vs HAVO vs VWO
What It Actually Means for Your Child ?
When my daughter was in Basisschool in Groep 8, in an event I casually asked her teacher how she was doing ? She told me that she is doing great etc etc and suddenly she mentioned I think she would go to HAVO/VWO. I believe if you have heard this , I wont tell you lies but I felt like a dumb mother .Trust me , I can vouch for that I am quite an involved mother to my children’s education, but those words were like NASA scientists project paper to me. Although I have read about it but could not fathom completely.
So I know one of the biggest questions expat parents have is what VMBO, HAVO, and VWO really mean. Let me help you with this. These are the main secondary school pathways in the Netherlands, and they are closely tied to your child’s academic direction after group 8.
VMBO is the more practical route. It prepares students for vocational education and hands-on careers.
VWO is the most academic pathway and prepares students for university.
What makes this difficult for many parents is that these pathways are not just labels. They shape what subjects your child studies, the pace of learning, and the direction of their future education. That is why the schooladvies in group 8 carries so much weight.
It is also important to remember that one pathway is not “better” than another.
Dutch education is designed to place children where they are most likely to succeed.
A practical learner may thrive in VMBO, while a child who enjoys theory and abstract thinking may do better in HAVO or VWO.
For expat families, this can feel very different from education systems where all children stay on one path for longer.
But in the Dutch system, early guidance is considered normal. The key is to understand that the pathway is not a fixed judgment of your child’s value or potential.
If you are trying to interpret school conversations, reports, or recommendations, learning these three pathways is essential. Once you understand them, the rest of the Dutch secondary system becomes much easier to follow.
